ALL THE SWIMSUITS YOU NEED THIS SUMMER IF YOU'RE PETITE & CURVY

ALL THE SWIMSUITS YOU NEED THIS SUMMER IF YOU'RE PETITE & CURVY

I think it’s safe to say that swimsuit shopping is not usually an activity many of us look forward to. Aside from the complications of figuring out what size to wear in different brands, we tend to dread it because it means confronting what our body looks like (after months of hiding under layers during the winter). Swimwear hasn’t really been my favorite category to shop for either. When I was younger going swim shopping tended to be a reminder of the abs I didn’t have and my stretch marks on my upper thighs. Over time, I’ve gotten more comfortable in my own skin, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have days where I still feel self conscious.

This shoppable swim guide ended up being a continuation of a post I wrote last year about my favorite swim trends. Most of the trends I loved in Summer 2018 (sporty one pieces, plunging v-necks, etc.) are still going strong this season! There’s nothing I love more than fashion trends that have staying power because seriously who has the time to keep up with all the changes!

As you go through the swimsuit shopping process this year, I hope you know that if something doesn’t fit you, it’s more of a reflection of the fashion industry needing to get with the program from a sizing perspective than it is about the worthiness and value of your body. So have fun with it and don’t take it too seriously!

ONE PIECES

Out From Under Printed Tie-Front One-Piece Swimsuit - Size Medium

What I loved…

  • Silhouette - I love the placement of the cut-out on this suit because it helps to define my waist and plays up my pear shape.

  • So comfortable - Not only do I love this silhouette, but this bathing suit was super comfy.

  • Minimal gapping - Generally, when I wear dresses or bathing suits with cut outs in the back sometimes it causes weird gapping there. Luckily this wasn’t a huge issue with this swimsuit.

  • Nice butt coverage - One thing I always feel self-conscious about is when a bathing suit is too “cheeky” and it feels like my bottom is hanging out. However, this swimsuit has great butt coverage so that wasn’t a concern here!

Verdict: Buy!

Summersalt The Sidestroke - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Silhouette - I absolutely loved that it was a one shoulder design because it looks super glamourous. Not to mention that it’s a universally flattering style.

What could have been better…

  • Back straps not as comfy -  When I bought this suit, I assumed it was the exact same one shoulder design on the front and back. If you look at the back picture, it’s a slightly different design in back. There’s kind of a criss cross strap situation. On me, I felt like the cross strap hit my shoulder in a weird place so it wasn’t as comfortable as I thought it would be. That being said it wasn’t a total dealbreaker.

Verdict: Buy!

Summersalt The Causeway - Size 6

What could have been better…

  • Too big in bust - Ran into a classic pear problem with this bathing suit…The bottom part fit my hips, but the top was way too big. It was a bummer because I really loved the style of this suit.

  • Crotch fit funny - The other thing I wanted to mention about this suit is that the crotch area was a bit funky. It seemed liked there was extra fabric so it was kind of bunching up down there.

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Xhilaration Striped Scoop Back One Piece Swimsuit - Size Medium

What could have been better…

  • Straps were too tight - As much as I wanted this bathing suit to work because the print is super cute, the straps were way too tight. They were so tight that the straps were about to slide off my shoulders.

  • A little too much booty exposure - I definitely more on the modest side when it comes to bathing suit coverage. This suit made me feel like too much of my butt was hanging out. The other reason I’m not a fan of “cheeky” styles is because I feel like I’m a couple strides away from a wedgie.

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Sea Angel Plunge One Piece Swimsuit - Size Small

What I loved…

  • Silhouette  - If there was a swimsuit of an equivalent of a fit & flare dress, I think it would a plunge v-neck bathing suit. Time and time again this proves to be a great silhouette for me because it always seems to fit me well and accentuates my best feature. Not to mention it’s comfortable too because it’s a one piece!

Verdict: Buy!

TWO PIECES

Out From Under Tulip Underwire Bikini Top - Size Small

What I loved…

  • Underwire top - One of my go-to silhouettes for bathing suits are underwire or demi tops. While it is a more retro style, I’m a fan because it accentuates what little I do have up top :)

What could have been better…

  • Band was slightly tight -  Normally I’m a small when it comes to bikini tops, but this one felt a bit tight on me. Therefore, I’d recommend ordering your usual size plus one size up.

Verdict: Buy, but also order a size up!

Out From Under High-Waisted Boyshort Bikini Bottom - Size Medium

What I loved…

  • High-waisted silhouette - I’m always a fan of high rise bottoms! The main reason I’m a fan is because I generally find they have better booty coverage than other bikini bottoms styles. I feel less worried about ending up with a giant wedgie during walks on the beach and having butt hang out.

What could have been better…

  • Waist gapping - I didn’t have a waist gap problem with the actual bottom. However, the decorative upper part of the waistband seemed to gap a bit in the back.

Verdict: Buy!

Xhilaration Square Neck Bralette Bikini Top - Size Medium

What could have been better…

  • Style - I thought I was really going to love this silhouette because the square neckline would have been something new for me. However, this top was a bit underwhelming in my opinion. I wish the top was a bit longer because it stopped right were my boobs ended. If the top was longer, I think it would have suited my body type better.

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Shade & Shore Beach Hipster Bikini Bottom - Size Medium

What could have been better…

  • A little small - I always seem to have the same problem with hipster bikini bottoms. They are slightly too small and it feels like my crack is about to slip out at any moment. If this bottom was a little bigger.

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Kona Sol Keyhole Tie Back Bikini Top - Size Small

What I loved…

  • Style - I really loved how unique this top was! I haven’t seen anything like it before. I loved the tie in back.

  • Comfortable - Honestly this bikini top kind of reminded me of wearing a sports bra, which I kind of loved!

Verdict: Buy!

Kona Sol Medium Coverage Keyhole Hipster Bikini Bottom - Size Medium

What could have been better…

  • Wish they came up higher in back - As you can tell, I’m super picky when it comes to bathing suit bottoms. Most of the ones I tried on had something that was slightly off and I knew it would annoy me. While I did wish these bottoms came up higher in the back, they didn’t feel as revealing as the Shade & Shore bottoms.

  • Bottoms - wish they came up higher in the back - crack about to hangout but not as bad as black bottoms

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Kitty and Vibe Scoop Top - Size A

What I loved…

  • Silhouette - I thought this bathing suit top was super cute! I loved the sporty vibes!

What could have been better…

  • Straps were tight - I ordered the Size A because it was the recommend size for women who are a size 32B in bras, but the straps felt too tight. It’s possible that they could stretch out over time and feel less tight.

  • Small - I would legit only recommend buying this swimsuit if you have no boobs (like me). However, the being said this top felt super small for me. Perhaps sizing up to the B size would solve both of these problems.

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Kitty and Vibe High Waisted Bottoms  - Size M2

What I loved…

  • High rise style - I’m all about the high rise bottoms because they generally provide more bottom coverage than other styles. I was super happy with how these fit. Plus they’re reversible :)

Verdict: Buy!

Kitty and Vibe Triangle Top - Size A

What I loved…

  • Adjustable straps - One thing I liked about this top over the Scoop Top was the fact that the straps were adjustable. It was nice to be able to set them to the comfortable

What could have been better…

  • Small -  Same deal as the Scoop Top - I legit only recommend buying this top if you are fairly flat chested because there is little support.

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Kitty and Vibe Full Coverage Bottoms - Size M2

What could have been better…

  • Coverage - For being full coverage bottoms, I was kinda surprised how much of my butt was still hanging out. Especially since I’m wearing the “M2” size which is specifically designed for larger booties. Similar to the Target bottoms, I felt like my crack was about to hang out.

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Summersalt Plunge Bikini Top - Size 4

What I loved…

  • V-neckline -  I absolutely love this silhouette, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who have been following my blog for awhile. It looks super glamorous! Just want to point out that this style is a little different than the J. Crew V-neck suit I posted about earlier because it’s a bit more dramatic.

Verdict: Buy!

Summersalt High Leg Mid Rise Bikini Bottom - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Mid Rise - I really appreciated that Summersalt carries a mid-rise bottom because it seems like most places either carry high-rise or low-rise. It’s nice to have an in between option!

What could have better…

  • Slightly cheeky - Personally, I still found this bottom to be a little revealing in back. And if you’ve made it to this part of the blog post you’re probably well aware that I prefer to keep my booty more covered. Overall though, it wasn’t a total dealbreaker.

Verdict: Buy!
