THE PETITE PEAR'S SHORTS GUIDE: SOFT SHORTS EDITION

First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who wrote in on either Facebook or Instagram about what type of shorts you’re looking for this summer! Your feedback definitely helped me narrow down the shorts shopping search and focus what styles I thought you’d most like to see.

As a quick refresher, these were the top requests:

While originally I just planned on writing one blog post about shorts shopping, I quickly realized that I would need to write to separate posts since I found a number of great options :) Today’s post is dedicated to flowy & soft shorts and next week’s is all about denim!

Personally, I always find shorts shopping a challenge because it usually ends up being waist gap central! However, I hope this post will help you steer clear of that and make your shopping experience more enjoyable!

Keep reading for all my shorts picks this summer!

RECOMMENDED STYLES

Ann Taylor Marina Tie-Waist Shorts - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Silhouette - As soon as I laid my eyes on these - I fell in love! They’re a nice modern take on paper bag shorts.

  • Comfy - These are made out of a super soft material, which felt amazing! I will say that the fabric is a bit on the heavier side so they might not be the best shorts for warmer summer days.

What could have been better…

  • Between sizes - Personally, I found that I was sort of between sizes, but ultimately decided the bigger size (Size 6) was best for me. The Size 4 fit better in the waist, but was too tight in the crotch. I’d rather have shorts too big in the waist then too big in the crotch.

  • Slight waist gap - As I mentioned above, l sadly had a waist with the Size 6 shorts, but since they are belted you can fake it till you make it!

Madewell Striped Paperbag Shorts - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Super high rise  - I liked that these shorts were super high rise because they really show of my waist! (Front rise = 14.375’’)

  • Fit well - Overall, these shorts fit me well. They were too tight in the hips so they felt very comfortable!

Madewell Pull-On Shorts - Size Medium

What I loved…

  • Comfy, but chic - These shorts kill two bird with one stone - they’re super comfy because of the elastic waistband, but they’re also a simple design which makes them perfect for pairing back with dressier, printed tops!

What could have been better…

  • Slightly big in the waist - While these shorts were a little too roomy in the waist, I think it was probably because the shorts themselves ran big. Therefore, I’d recommend ordering both your normal size plus one size down.

H&M Paper Bag Shorts - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Flowy - When it comes to flowy shorts, hands down I think that H&M has the best selection. The reason I’m such a big of soft shorts like this is because they’re so d*mn comfortable. Not to mention they don’t feel restrictive around my thighs which is a huge win! (Leg opening = 28’’)

  • Minimal - Similar to Madwell shorts above, I really love how minimal the design of these shorts is! It makes them super easy to pair back with a wide variety of tops. Also if you’re looking for a less obvious paperbag short this one is sans belt.

H&M Belted Paper Bag Shorts - Size 4

What I loved…

  • Polished - If you’re for paperbag style shorts that make statement, then these definitely fit the bill. The belt definitely adds some drama!

What could have been better…

  • Fit  - Overall, I was happy with how these fit on me except for this hip area.These were a bit tight on me since I’m wearing a size 4. I’d definitely recommend wearing your normal size in this style. The only reason I sized down was because they only had a 4 and 8 in store. If I had tried these on in my regular size, I think the fit would be much better!

H&M Shorts with Tie Belt - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Printed -  Such a summer-y take on the paperbag short trend!

H&M Tailored Shorts - Size 8

What I loved…

  • Sophisticated - These shorts look so polished and sophisticated for being from H&M! They’re a great option if you’re looking for a short that looks more elevated.

  • High Rise - The main reason I love paperbag shorts I because they are generally high-rise and fit my waist area better. These fit like a glove! Wearing these with a shirt tucked in is a great way to show off my pear shape!

ASOS Design Mom Shorts - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Flared leg opening - One of my pro tips for shorts shopping when you’re a petite pear is opting for short styles with flared leg openings. Often times I find that they’re more accommodating for curvy thighs! Gotta give them some breathing room! (Leg opening = 28’’)

  • Longer inseam - A couple of my readers mentioned that they’re looking for shorts with longer inseams this summer. These are definitely a great option! (Inseam = 5.75’’)

  •  High waisted - I love a good high-rise short even in the summer! These would look great paired with a simple tank top tucked into them.

ASOS Soft Suit Shorts - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Style -  Not only was the silhouette of these shorts super chic, but there also low-key super comfortable. I loved how flowy this style is!

  • Length -  These are another great option if you’re looking for a longer length short this summer. For reference, these shorts are an inch longer than the Mom shorts I tried on above.

What could have been better…

  • Color - I loved the style of these shorts, but wish I got them in a different color because I felt like they kind of made me look like a leprechaun.

STYLES TO STAY AWAY FROM

Banana Republic High-Rise 4’’ Tencel Pull-on Short - Size 6

What could have been better…

  • Too tight in the hips - When I saw these shorts in the store, I thought they were going to be super comfy because they’re pull-ons. Sadly I was disappointed because they’re snug in the hips.

  • Waist too big - Additionally, the waist of these shorts was too big for me so it really through off the whole fit of the entire short, which you can see in the pics. Lol overall just not a cute look for me.

Shorts ratings:

Fit: 3

Waist gap: 3

Price: $$

Garment measurements:

Waist = 31’’

Inseam = 4’’

Hips = 39’’

Verdict: Don’t buy!

Banana Republic High Rise 5’’ Linen-Cotton Shorts - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Style - While I really liked the overall look of these paperbag shorts (minus the d-ring belt), they weren’t my favorite from a fit perspective.

What could have been better…

  • Slightly big in the waist - Since these were too big in the waist on me, they sat a bit lower than where they should have. The crotch felt like it was sagging a bit. If I went down in size, the hips would have been too snug because the hips juuust fit me in the current size.

Garment measurements:

Waist = 32.75’’

ASOS Design Denim Longline Culotte Short - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Longer length - If you’re on the hunt for a longer inseam, these are a nice option.

  • Flared leg opening  - I’m always a fan of shorts with flared leg openings because I find them flattering for my body type!

What could have better…

  • Crotch area was too big - I’m so sad to put these shorts in the do not buy section because they’re a super cute casual style. However, they were too big in the crotch so they looked a little baggy and unflattering on me.

Waist = 29’’

Front rise = 13.75’’

Missguided City Shorts - Size 6

What could have been better…

  • Crotch fit funny - I thought these shorts were going to be a home run for me because the pictures on ASOS looked super cute, but unfortunately they were too bulky in the crotch area. (look at the front view picture)

  • Lining inside - Since these white shorts are a little on the see-through side, they have a lining inside. I definitely wasn’t a fan because I think they would get super hot and clingy real fast on hotter days.
