Hi.

I'm Kristin! A short & curvy girl seeking clothes that fit. Originally from the South, I'm now taking on NYC! My blog is dedicated to providing style and fit guides for petite-pear shaped women.

THE PETITE PEAR'S SHORTS GUIDE: DENIM SHORTS EDITION

THE PETITE PEAR'S SHORTS GUIDE: DENIM SHORTS EDITION

My denim shorts guide is the second post of a two part series all about shorts shopping! One thing you might notice after reading this guide is that it’s a bit shorter than my blog post on soft shorts. Honestly, this is because I find it more challenging to find denim shorts that don’t gap at the back waistband and/or aren’t too short!

I headed to the usual suspects such as American Eagle and Topshop (plus others!) where I normally have good luck with jeans to see if they would come through in the shorts department. I have to admit I completely struck out at Topshop - nothing fit me quite right so I completely left them out of the guide altogether. Additionally, I branched out to some new places that I don’t normally go for denim shopping - GAP and Banana Republic to test the waters!

Scroll down to find out which denim shorts were truly the most pear-friendly :)

RECOMMENDED STYLES

Banana Republic Mid Rise 3’’ Denim Short - Size 27

What I loved….

  • Comfortable - Overall, I was happy with how these shorts fit me. There wasn’t a noticeable waist gap and they hugged my curves nicely. I honestly was shocked at how well they fit because normally I really struggle to find mid rise shorts that fit me in the waist area!

What could have been better…

  • Wish they came up higher in the back - My only really complaint about these shorts was that I wish the came up a little higher in the back. About a 0.5 inch to 1 inch more and they’d be perfect!

Garment measurements:

Waist = 30.5’’

Inseam = 5’’

Hips = 37’’

Verdict: Buy! (but order both your regular size and one size down)

Everlane Denim Short - Size 27

What I loved…

  • Fit - All I can say is - WOW! When I put these shorts on, they fit perfectly. It is a rare event that I as a pear-shaped lady that I can put on a pair of shorts and not have gapping at the back of the waistband. Honestly, I have no complaints about these shorts!

  • Fabric - Loved the soft feel of these shorts! I think the fabric they use for their shorts feels much better than their long denim.

Garment measurements:

Waist = 30.75’’

Good American The Bombshell Short - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Longer inseam - Usually when I find destructed or distressed jean shorts similar to this style, they are basically booty shorts. I really loved the longer inseam of these shorts because they provided a bit more coverage than your standard jean shorts.

  • Fit - These shorts are definitely curve friendly so they don’t feel constricting anywhere. Not to mention they’re made out of a super comfortable and stretchy fabric!

What could have been better…

  • Slight waist gap - I really want to emphasize the word slight here - as the waist gap was not a deal breaker for me. I personally was hesitant to try out Good American’s shorts because I didn’t have much luck with their full length denim. While the brand says they are size inclusive, I still ran into the same typical massive waist gap issues I always have with their full length denim. The waist gap I had with shorts was no where near as noticeable as it was with their jeans.

AEO Denim Ne(X)t Level Midi Short - Size 8

What I loved…

  • Adjustable length  - A number of you asked for shorts that had a longer inseam. One of my favorite features about this pair from American Eagle is the adjustable length. When they are unrolled you’ve got yourself a nice 5.5’’ denim short and when they’re rolled up they’re 3’’ long. So basically you’re getting two shorts in one :)

What could have been better…

  • Too big in waist -  Unsurprisingly, these shorts were too big in the waist on me, but this is most likely because they’re a mid-rise style. However, it wasn’t a total deal-breaker for me, but I’d recommend wearing a belt with them.

  • Run small - FYI these shorts definitely run small, I went up a size because I couldn’t fit into the size 6!

AEO AE Ne(X)t Level Curvy High-Waisted Short Short - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Super comfy - They are super form-fitting, but also comfortable since the fabric of these shorts is super stretchy! While they look absolutely tiny when you hold them up, they do actually fit true to size.

What could have been better…

  • Slightly big in waist - Even though these are curvy fit, I still had a slight waist gap. However, I’m not going to write them off on this alone since overall they were a decent fit otherwise.

Gap High Rise 4’’ Denim Shorts

What I loved…

  • Fit - These shorts felt amazing and I loved how they fit my curves. They’re a close second behind the Banana Republic ones, but they do have one drawback.

What could have been better…

  • Slightly big in the waist - Sadly, the waistband gapped in the back. Since I was a fan of the fit I decided to give them a pass. Still recommend a belt though :)

ASOS Design Denim A-Line Mom Shorts - Size 6

What I loved…

  • A-line silhouette - Usually I skeptical of trying anything label “Mom” short because generally I find they aren’t cut for my body type. And most of the time I just end up with a huge waist gap. However, when I saw the words “A-line” I thought there might be a chance they would fit me since A-line skirts and dresses generally work for me. When I pulled them on, they fit decently well in the hip and waist area (minimal gapping).

What could have been better…

  • Tight in front - My only real complaint with these shorts looked a bit tight in the front area. You can see the horizontal pull marks in the front picture. It wasn’t a total deal breaker, but it’s possible you could find some better options out there.

STYLES TO STAY AWAY FROM

LOFT Denim Roll Shorts in Original Mid Indigo Wash - Size 28

What could have been better…

  • Too big in waist - It’s official - I’ve pretty much given up on bottoms from Loft. It seems like no matter what style of bottoms (pants, shorts, etc.) I try they are always too big in the waist. These were definitely past the point where a belt would help!

  • Saggy crotch - Since these shorts were too big in the waist, the crotch of the shorts also looked saggy, which you can see in the front picture.

Shorts ratings:

Gap Mid Rise 5’’ Denim Shorts - Size 28

What could have been better…

  • Too tight in crotch - I really wanted these shorts to work for me because I liked the length, but they felt too tight in the crotch. The front rise seam felt like it was digging into me, which would get annoying after any extended wear.

  • Waist gap - The waistband was gapping in the back for me so if you do purchase I recommend a belt!
