Hi.

I'm Kristin! A short & curvy girl seeking clothes that fit. Originally from the South, I'm now taking on NYC! My blog is dedicated to providing style and fit guides for petite-pear shaped women.

THE PEAR NECESSITIES: THE BLAZER

THE PEAR NECESSITIES: THE BLAZER

I can still remember my first experience going shopping for a grown-up blazer. It was with my mom at Jack Wills in Georgetown. If you guys don’t remember Jack Wills is basically the UK version of Abercrombie except it was a bit more expensive and carried some more formal clothes. When I was in college, I thought their tweed blazers looked cool and I had been eyeing them for some time. While I remember loving how the blazer looked, I also remember the sleeves being way to long for me. So I used to fold them under so they weren’t swallowing my hands. However, it just made the sleeves look bulky and awkward because I was folding the buttons on the sleeves under. After a few years, I eventually got rid of the blazer (sorry mom if you’re reading this) because I didn’t feel 100% comfortable when wearing it.

Over time, I’ve noticed this has been a constant theme in deciding what stays and goes from my wardrobe. If I don’t 100% love the fit, I inevitably get rid of it because I don’t feel as confident wearing it. I’m constantly fidgeting and adjusting since the improper fit annoys me.

I have to admit blazers are definitely a category that I don’t shop for often and I think it stems from the fact that I’ve struggled to find ones that fit me and look cool at the same time! (However, I’m happy to report that I’ve found some great petite & pear friendly options that I’m sharing in today’s post.)

As I evaluated the fit of the blazers I reviewed for this post, I kept this lesson I learned in mind. What I focused on was finding options that were comfortable, well tailored to my body type, and looked chic. Additionally, I biased towards finding options that require no alterations to avoid spending more on top of the clothing cost. Keep on reading for all the styles I recommend :)

1901 Stretch Cotton Twill Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fit - I was super impressed by how well this blazer fit me. The shoulders fit comfortably. They weren’t too tight, which is a common fit issue I experience with blazers. It also was roomy

  • Fabric - I definitely was a fan of the material because it was nice and stretchy for my curves!

  • Many color options - Good news! This blazer comes in lots of different colors - ranging from classic basics to fun statement colors.

    What could have been better…

  • Slightly big in bust - If I could make one change to this blazer it would be reducing the bust area slightly because there was extra fabric around the armpits. However, it was a total dealbreaker.

Express Petite Notch Collar One Button Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Color - I’m obsessed with the color of this blazer! It reminds me of the one that Jane Fonda wears in Grace & Frankie.

What could have been better…

  • Slightly tight in shoulders - This blazer was a bit tight in the shoulders. It was mostly noticeable when I held my arms out in front of me.

  • Slightly big in bust - Since I have a pear shape, my bust is proportionately smaller than my hips, which means tops/jackets are too big in the bust. I notice this blazer looked a little roomy in the bust area one me.

Express Petite Windowpane Boyfriend Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Style - I really loved this style because it was something unique and different! Also I’m a huge fan of double breasted blazers.

What could have been better…

  • Slightly tight in shoulders - Similar to the pink blazer, this one was a little tight in the shoulders on me.

Ann Taylor Petite 1-Button Blazer in Seasonless Stretch - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  •  Fit - Compared to the styles I tried on from Brooks Brothers and Express, this blazer fit me very well in the shoulders. It was super comfortable and didn’t feel tight at all.

What could have been better…

  • Slightly big - I ordered a Size 6 Petite, which is generally the size I wear. However, this blazer was too big in the waist and hip area on me. I’d recommend ordering one size down as well as your normal size.

J.Crew Petite Parke Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fit well in shoulders - Similar to the Ann Taylor blazer I tried on, this one fit me well in the shoulder area.

  • Length - Overall, I was happy with length of this blazer because it fell at the top of my thighs.

  • Multiple colors - Also available in black!

What could have been better…

  • Too big in waist - When I tried this blazer on, it was too big in the waist. I could fold the blazer over the buttons because of the excess fabric. I’d recommend ordering your normal size, plus one size down.

Ann Taylor Petite Long Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Length - Even though this blazer is a longer length, I didn’t think that it overwhelmed my petite frame.

  • Fit - I found this blazer fit me well in the shoulder area.

What could have been better…

  • Too big - In the picture you can tell this blazer looks kind of boxy, which is due to the fact that this size was too big for me. I think wearing a size down would fix this issue. Therefore, I’d recommend ordering your normal size, plus one size down.

Banana Republic Petite Long and Lean-Fit Lightweight Wool Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What could have been better…

  • Slightly big - Similar to the Ann Taylor 1-Button Blazer I tried on, this one was also too big in the waist and hip area. Perhaps sizing down would help with this issue. When ordering, I’d recommend buying one size down as well as your normal size.

Banana Republic Petite Classic-Fit Washable Italian Wool-Blend Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fit - Compared the Long & Lean-Fit Blazer above, this one fit me much better! While it still wasn’t 100% perfect (it was a little roomy in the waist and hips), overall it was still much better. One option is to also buy a size down, but keep in mind it might mean that the shoulder area is tighter.

Talbots Petite Aberdeen Kint Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

Fabric - The fabric is so nice! Since it’s a knit fabric, it’s super comfy!

  • Fit well in shoulder area - One of the make or break fit points of a jacket or blazer is the shoulders. If it doesn’t fit properly in the shoulders, then the whole fit looks off.

What could have been better…

  • Roomy in waist and hips - This definitely was recurring theme across all the blazers I tried on, which surprised me. It definitely made the blazer look a little baggy on me.

Brooks Brothers Petite Wool Two-Button Jacket - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fit - Overall, I liked the length of this blazer and it fit comfortably in the shoulders.

What could have been better…

  • Too tight in armpits - This blazer felt way to restrictive in the armpit area. I think over extended wear it would become uncomfortable unless you got alterations. However, it seems like there are better options available.

Ann Taylor Petite 2-Button Blazer - Size 6 Petite

What could have better…

  • Style - Out of all the styles I tried on from Ann Taylor, this style was probably my least favorite. It had a lot of pockets going on, which I found visually distracting.

  • Too big in bust - In this picture, you can tell this blazer is too big in the bust for me. As a result it looks bulkier on me than I would like. If you do decide to order, I’d recommend ordering your normal size, plus one size down.

Brooks Brothers Petite Stretch-Wool Peak Lapel Jacket - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fabric - The fabric feels super soft and amazing! Very comfortable for extended wear.

  • Slimming cut - Overall, I felt the cut of this blazer looked was very flattering and slimming (especially with the seaming details).

What could have been better…

  • Shoulders - The fit of this blazer didn’t feel quite right in the shoulders. Not to mention it has shoulder pads, so it kind of exaggerated the issue. Basically, the shoulder pads didn’t sit directly on my shoulders, they were too far forward.

  • Too big in bust - Due to my pear shape (bust is proportionally smaller than my hips), this blazer was slightly big in the bust. However, since this blazer is on the pricer side already, I wouldn’t want to pay for alterations on top of it.
