THE PEAR NECESSITIES: THE WHITE BUTTON DOWN SHIRT

THE PEAR NECESSITIES: THE WHITE BUTTON DOWN SHIRT

It’s been a long time since I’ve gone shopping for button down shirt. Generally, I stay away from this category because I find it challenging to shop for. Often times when a button down fits my bust area it’s then too tight it hip area! Can anyone else relate? However, recently one of my friends reached out about where to find a good button down and I realized I had NO IDEA off the top of my head! So I decided to order styles from a variety of brands to figure out which ones are truly pear-friendly! Keep reading to find out what brands I recommend!

Brooks Brothers Petite Non-Iron Fitted Dress Shirt - Size 4 Petite

What I loved…

  • Polished and comfortable - Out of all the white button down shirts I tried on, this one was by far my favorite. It looked sophisticated and polished, but most importantly it was comfy! There is nothing worse than a button down shirt that feels stiff and restrictive.

  • Ideal length - I was very happy with the length of this shirt because it wasn’t so long that it looked like a dress. (Center front = 26’’)

  • Not too tight in hips - A common problem I have with button down shirts is that when they fit my bust and upper body they are often too tight in the hip area. I’m happy to report I didn’t have that issue with this shirt! Plenty of room for those with curvier hips like me! (Bottom opening = 36.5’’)

Ann Taylor Petite Perfect Shirt - Size 4 Petite

What I loved…

  • Sleeves were just right - So glad this shirt was available in a petite size because it meant that the sleeves were just the right length. (Sleeve length = 29’’)

  • Curve-friendly - I’d rank this button-down as my number two choice behind the Brooks Brothers one because the cut worked well with my pear shape. It fit nicely in both the bust and hip area so I felt comfortable wearing it.

What could have been better…

  • Fabric slightly thin - My only complaint about this shirt was the fabric. It was a bit thinner than I would prefer. However, this seemed to a theme across most of the shirts that I tried on.

Banana Republic Petite Parker Tunic-Fit Super-Stretch Shirt - Size 4 Petite

What I loved…

  • Silhouette - Since this button-down shirt is a tunic style cut, it fit my pear-shape nicely. There was enough room at the bottom hem to accommodate my curvy hips. Also this silhouette is a cool alternative to your standard button shirt.

What could have been better…

  • Slightly see through - As I’ve mentioned with some of the other button down shirts, the fabric seemed a little thin. Therefore, I’d recommend wearing a tank top underneath it.

Ralph Lauren Cotton Button-Down Shirt - Size S Petite

What I loved…

  • Length - One thing I really liked was that the length of this button down, it was on the shorter side so it worked well for my petite torso.

What could have been better…

  • Not as comfortable - It’s hard to articulate in words because it was more of a feeling. However, I found the overall fit of the Brooks Brothers’ and Ann Taylor button downs to be more comfortable.

J. Crew Petite Slim Stretch Perfect Shirt - Size 4 Petite

What I loved…

  • Classic look - I love the style of this button down because it’s super classic.

  • Sleeve length - The sleeves were just the right length for me!

What could have been better…

  • Tight in hip area - Compared to the Brooks Brothers and Ann Taylor button downs, the cut of this shirt was not as generous. It felt tight in the hip area, which made me feel uncomfortable.

Charter Club Petite Button-Down Woven Shirt - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Petite-friendly length - The length of this button down was perfect for my short torso.

What could have been better…

  • Front seam details - Personally, I was not a big fan of the dart details extending from the bust to the front hem.

  • Thin fabric - You can see in the picture that the fabric is on the thinner side, so I’d recommend wearing a shirt or tank underneath it.

Calvin Klein Petite Cotton Button-Front Shirt - Size 6 Petite

What could have been better…

  • Front seam details - Similar to the Charter Club button down, I was not a huge fan of the front darts.

  • Thin fabric - The theme continues! Moral of the story: wear a undershirt.

Old Navy Petite Relaxed Classic Clean-Slate Shirt - Size S Petite

What could have been better…

  • Thin material - Out of all the button-down shirts I tried off, this one was by far my least favorite. The fabric was see-through so you definitely would need to wear a undershirt with it. While this shirt is affordable, you’re kind of getting what you pay for.

  • Collar too soft - The collar fabric was not stiff enough so it completely laid flat no matter what I tried to do to make it stand up.
