Hi.

I'm Kristin! A short & curvy girl seeking clothes that fit. Originally from the South, I'm now taking on NYC! My blog is dedicated to providing style and fit guides for petite-pear shaped women.

THE PEAR NECESSITIES: THE SHEATH DRESS

THE PEAR NECESSITIES: THE SHEATH DRESS

Recently, I’ve started writing more clothing fit review posts on my blog. The main reason I started doing this is because I think it’s one way I can best serve you ladies. Personally, I find shopping to be an exhausting and demoralizing process so my goal is to spare you from it as much as possible. By trying on clothes and exposing you to new petite brands, my goal is to save you from hours in the dressing room and increase the chance you’ll find a piece you love without ordering from every brand under the sun.

In writing this post I realized, “ Man…It’s hard out there for petite girl to find a sheath dress that falls above your knees.” Generally, when I buy other styles of dresses in a petite size the length is fine so I was actually surprised to have this issue. However, I think it’s just the style of sheath dress most brands sell. Most seemed to be more on the conservative side from a length perspective, which is great for individuals with that fit preference, but leaves the rest of us having to always get dressed hemmed.

Keep on reading for my favorite sheath dress options for petite pears!

J.Crew Petite Resume Dress - Size 4 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fits comfortably - Overall, I was happy with how this dress fit me. It was nice and roomy in the hip area so it didn’t feel constricting.

  • Sleeve detail - I loved the unique details on the sleeves because it looks a little more exciting than your standard sheath dress.

What could have been better…

  • Slightly long - Ideally, I’d like this dress to fall an inch or two above my knee. This one was slightly longer than I preferred. (Center front = 34.5’’)

  • Slightly big in bust area - Since my upper body is smaller than my hip area, it’s not entirely surprising I ran into this issue with this dress. However, I didn’t consider it to be a deal breaker.

Calvin Klein Petite Split-Neck Sheath Dress - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fit like a glove - Out of all the dress I tried on this one fit my shape the best. The fabric is also super comfortable :)

What could have been better…

  • Too in big in the upper back - I noticed that this dress tended to gape a lot in the upper back area.

Ann Taylor Petite Seasonless Stretch Sheath Dress - Size 4 Petite

What I loved…

  • Great fit - In addition to the Calvin Klein dress, I also thought this one was flattering for my figure. Compared to the other styles I tried on, this one fit me well in both the bust area and hips.

What could have been better…

  • Too long - As I’ve mentioned with the other sheath dresses, I’d prefer the length to be shorter.

  • Slightly tight in neck area - My only real complaint was that the neckline felt a bit too tight. Just trying the dress on, it didn’t seem to uncomfortable, but it might become more so with extended wear.

Banana Republic Petite Bi-Stretch Racer-Neck Sheath Dress - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Style - I really loved how unique this dress looks. I haven’t seen many dresses like it.

What could have been better…

  • Too big in bust - This dress was too large in the bust area for me. I think this problem probably would be solved if I went down a size.

  • Too long - My preference would be to have this dress fall above my knees since there’s a side slit.

J. Crew Petite Long Sheath Dress - Size 4 Petite

What I loved…

  • Curve friendly - This dress is nice and stretchy so it fit me well in the hip area, which I really appreciated.

What could have been better…

  • Too big in bust area - I found this dress to be a little too roomy in the bust area, which is a classic pear problem I run into.

  • More waist definition - I wish this dress had more of a defined waistline to highlight my pear shape.

Kasper Petite V-Neck Sheath Dress - Size 4 Petite

What I loved…

  • Comfortable fabric - The fabric of this dress was very comfy and soft.

What could have been better…

  • Too big - I’d recommend sizing down in this dress because I found that it runs big. I think if I had sized down, it would have fixed the fit issues I had.

  • V-neckline depth - I wish the v-neck was cut a little bit deeper than it is.

Brooks Brother Petite Wool Sheath Dress - Size 4 Petite

What could have been better…

  • Tight through hips - Overall, this was my least favorite sheath dress that I tried on. Since it’s made of 100% wool fabric, there was no stretch, which was problematic for my curvy hips. Additionally, I think the cut of the dress seemed to be on the narrower side a well so it was tight in the hip area.

  • Slightly long - Similar to the other dresses I tried on, this dress was longer than I preferred. I would have like it to end above my knees.

  • Fabric was just ok - Given the price of this dress, I was expecting the fabric to be more of a wow! However, it wasn’t as soft and comfortable as I wanted.
