Hi.

WHERE TO FIND DRESS PANTS WHEN YOU'RE PETITE & CURVY

WHERE TO FIND DRESS PANTS WHEN YOU'RE PETITE & CURVY

It’s been awhile since I’ve had to wear dress pants. I probably have worn them since I was working at my first job out of college for Macy’s. Dress pants have always been a difficult category for me to shop for because of my curvy thighs and bum. At times I’ve found it challenging to find pairs that fit properly and are also flattering. (Also doesn’t help that I’m shortie too).

Recently, I had a reader reach out about where to find petite-friendly dress pants. Since I hadn’t shopped for a pair since college, I had to hit the stores to see what was out there. Overall, I had the best luck with J. Crew’s dress pants, which kind of made sense because that was my go-to store in the past. However, if you are looking for more affordable options - Old Navy is a great place to look.

Keep on reading below for my fit reviews of the styles I tried on :)

MY DRESS PANT RATING SCALE

Length: 1 to 5 (1 being not petite friendly, 5 being petite friendly)

Fit: 1 to 5  (1 being not curve/pear friendly, 5 being curve/pear friendly)

Waist Gap: 1 to 5 (1 massive waist gap, 5 no waist gap)

Price: $ to $$$$ ($ under $50, $$ under $100, $$$ under $150, $$$$ $150+)

RECOMMENDED STYLES

TROUSERS

J. Crew Full-Length Edie Trousers - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fit - Out of all the trouser-style dress pants I tried on, this pair from J. Crew by far fit me the best. I was shocked that I didn’t even have a waist gap in back.

  • Stretchy -  I really loved how comfortable and stretchy the fabric was.

What could be better…

  • Slightly long - If you wear these pants with flats, you might find they are a little long. (The inseam measurement of these pants was 29.5’’ and generally I prefer a 28’’ inseam.) Therefore, I’d recommend wearing these pants with a slight heel.

CROPPED PANTS

J. Crew French Girl Slim Crop Pant - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Cropped pants that are actually cropped pants - YAS! Thank goodness J. Crew offers these in a petite size because they were the proper length for cropped pants.

  • Sleek silhouette - Love how modern and slimming these look!

What could be better…

  • Slightly big in the waist - Although these pants are a little big in the waist, I didn’t find it too annoying. If need be, you could try safety pinning the excess fabric in the waistband to hold them in place better. (Unfortunately there are no belt loops.)

  •  No stretch - Just a heads up, these pants do not have stretch so you might want to take that into account when picking out your size.

J. Crew Cameron Slim Crop Pant - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Waist fits well - These pants fit properly in the waist area - no belt necessary!

What could be better…

  • Slightly tight through hips - Had to do a little bit of dance to get these pants on! However, once I had them on they were comfortable.

  • Length - I wish these pants were slightly longer because the overall length is a little odd.

SKINNY PANTS

Everlane Work Pant - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Great value - These pants are a nice quality for the price. If you’re looking for a go-to dress pant to keep in your closet all year round, these are a solid option.

  • Length - These pants are technically ankle length for the taller people of the world, however for us shorties they are regular length pants (Inseam measurement = 27.25’’).

  • Comfortable - Nice and stretchy! You can move around in these!

Old Navy High Rise Super Skinny Pant - Size 8 Petite

What I loved…

  • High rise - I’m all about a high rise pant because they show off my curves. This pair fits nicely around the waist.

  • Petite-friendly length - If you’re a shortie, these are the perfect length.

  • Affordable - These are super affordable and are a good alternative to the Everlane pants I reviewed above.

What could be better…

  •  Runs small - I usually wear a size 6, but I’m wearing a size 8 here.  The 8 fits me just right, so I’d recommend ordering a size up if you buy them.

LOFT Skinny Pants in Marisa Fit - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Fit - These are a great classic pair of skinny dress pants. I found the cut very slimming and flattering.

  • Material - I loved the thickness of the fabric and how sleek it looked.

What could better…

  • Slightly big in waist - I had a slight waist gap in back wearing these pants, so I’d recommend wearing a belt.

Old Navy Mid-Rise Pixie Full-Length Pant - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Affordable - If you’re looking for a low cost work pant option, these would do the job.

What could be better…

  • Slightly big in waist - I recommend wearing a belt since these pants gap in the back.

  • Little too long - These pants do come in a petite size, however I found they were slightly long on me and bunched up around the ankles. I’d recommend getting them tailored.

RELAXED PANTS

J. Crew Wide-Leg Crop Pant - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Comfy waistband - Love me some elastic! These pants fit properly around my waist.

  • Wide-leg opening - Usually I stick to skinny leg pants, but I was surprised how nice these looked.

 What could have been better…

  • Length - I actually wish these pants were a little bit shorter because I think they would look long on me if I was just wearing flats.

Everlane Italian Go Weave Easy Pant - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Elastic waistband - I’m a huge fan of elastic waistbands since they tend to reduce any potential waist gap issues.

  • Silhouette - I found the relaxed silhouette of these pants very comfortable and accommodating if you have curvier hips.

What could been better…

  • Runs large - I’d recommend ordering a size down in this pant because the 6 was too big for me (however that is my normal size).

STYLES TO STAY AWAY FROM

Everlane Italian GoWeave Crop Trouser - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Cropped length - These pants are technically cropped, but if your petite they will be regular length pants for you :)

What could have been better…

  • Major waist gap - These pants were too big in the waist for me and I think they were past the point where a belt would be helpful.

Dress pants ratings:

Length: 4

Fit: 2

Waist Gap: 1

Price: $$$

Garment measurements:

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Old Navy Mid-Rise Harper Ankle Pants - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Length - Happy that Old Navy offers so many different styles of dress pants in petite sizes.

What could have been better…

  • Way too big in the waist - If you’re pear-shaped like me, I don’t recommend these pants because they were too large in the waist (Waist measurement = 32’’).

Length: 4

Fit: 2

Waist Gap: 1

Waist = 32’’

LOFT Trousers in Julie Fit - Size 6 Petite

 What could have been better…

  • Large waist gap - Most trouser pants that I try on (even if they are petite size) are often too big in the waist, and these were no exception.

  • Too long - Since the pants were too big in the waist, it resulted in them being a little long on me.

Waist Gap: 2

J. Crew Martie Slim Crop Pant - Size 6 Petite

 What could be been better…

  •  Length - I’m not a huge fan of the cropped length because I feel like they look more like high-waters on me.

  •  Fit - While these pants fit well around my waist, they seem to be a little baggy in the crotch area.

LOFT Skinny Pants in Julie Fit - Size 6 Petite

What could be better…

  • Too big in waist - These pants are very similar to the Marisa Fit which I mentioned above. Between the two fits, I personally found this one didn’t work as well for my body type because the waist was too big. I don’t wearing a belt would solve the issue.

Dress pants ratings:

Length: 5

Fit: 3

Waist Gap: 3

Garment measurements:

Waist = 32’’

Front rise = 9’’

Back rise = 15.5’’

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

LOFT Slit Cuff Skinny Ankle Pants - Size 6 Petite

What could be better…

  • Too big in waist - These pants are similar to the Everlane Work Pant and Old Navy High Skinny Pant. Since this pair was oversized in the waist area, I’d recommend going with one of those brands instead.

  • Tight in calf area - These pants were a little tight around my calves. Again, I’d vote the other styles before this one.
