Hi.

I'm Kristin! A short & curvy girl seeking clothes that fit. Originally from the South, I'm now taking on NYC! My blog is dedicated to providing style and fit guides for petite-pear shaped women.

WHERE TO FIND PETITE, PEAR-FRIENDLY PEACOATS

WHERE TO FIND PETITE, PEAR-FRIENDLY PEACOATS

It’s officially starting to feel like winter in New York. Just this week we’ve had some days in 30s. Eeek and today they are calling for snow! One of my fellow readers recently DM’ed me asking where to shop for winter coats so I’m sharing reviews of coats I tried from Express, Anne Klein, J. Crew, Lauren Ralph Lauren and a few other brands.

What makes coat shopping difficult for me is finding a coat that doesn’t overwhelm my height and one where the sleeves aren’t too long. When it comes to coat shopping, if you’re under 5’ 4’’ I definitely recommend buying a petite size because the proportions of the jacket will be better suited to your frame and hopefully you can avoid having to get the item tailored. Thankfully, I found a good amount of petite options out there so keep reading to see what I found :)

Express Petite Belted Wool-Blend Tweed Trench Coat - Size S Petite

What I loved…

  • Fit - Out of all the coats I tried on, I felt like this coat fit my shape best.

  • Belted - I love when coats have a belt because it helps show off my waist and pear shape.

  • Sleeve length - Petite-friendly sleeves! Yay!

Garment measurements:

Bust =  37’’

Waist = 32.75’’

Bottom opening = 42.5’’

Center back = 33.25’’

Sleeve length = 28.5’’

Verdict: Buy!

Anne Klein Petite Double-Breasted Wool Peacoat - Size S Petite

What I loved…

  • Length - This is a great shorter length peacoat option compared to the other ones I tried on.

  • Fit - I was really happy with how this coat fit. The bust, shoulders and hips were comfortable and not too snug.

  • Sleeve length - Sleeves were a petite friendly length.

Garment measurements:

Bust = 37’’

Waist = 34’’

Bottom opening = 42.5’’

Center back = 30’’

Sleeve length = 29’’

Verdict: Buy!

Lauren Ralph Lauren Quilted Parka - Size S Petite

What I loved…

  • Super comfy - This coat feels amazing! I really loved how cozy and comfortable it is. It has a nice sherpa lining around the collar.

  • Fit - This jacket fit my shape and curves well.

  • Sleeves - The sleeve length was petite-friendly! Similar to the J. Crew Lodge coat, this one had hidden knit cuffs inside the sleeves to keep the wind from blowing up them.

Garment measurements:

Bust =  38’’

Waist = 35’’

Bottom opening = 45’’

Center back = 33.25’’

Sleeve length = 30’’

Verdict: Buy!

Express Petite Boucle Cocoon Coat - Size S Petite

What I loved…

  • Silhouette - I felt like this coat was complimented my shape well and fit better than the J. Crew Cocoon coat.

  • Sleeve length - These sleeves ended at my wrists - right where I wanted them too!

What could have better…

  • More buttons - I wish this coat had more than just one button. It looks super fashionable, but I feel like more buttons are necessary to stay warm in NYC :)

Garment measurements:

Bust = 39’’

Waist = 36’’

Bottom opening = 45.5’’

Center back = 36’’

Sleeve length = 28’’

Verdict: Buy!

J. Crew Petite Chateau Parka in Italian Stadium-Cloth Wool - Size 8 Petite

What I loved…

  • Just the right length - One of the best things about J.Crew is that they offer petite sizes! So you don’t have to worry about coats being too long.

  • A-line silhouette - I really like the silhouette of this coat. I felt like it complimented by body type.

What could have been better…

  • A little roomy - Once again I relied on the True Fit recommendation for what size to order, however I found this coat was slightly too big. Normally, I wear a size 6 so I think I would have been better off ordering my normal size. The bust area in particular seemed too big, which isn’t a surprise since I’m pear shaped and my bust is on the smaller side.

  • Sleeves slightly long - Even though this was a petite size, I found the sleeves were a bit too long.

Garment measurements:

Bust  = 39.5’’

Waist = 41’’

Bottom opening = 50’’

Center back = 30.38’’

Sleeve length = 29’’

Verdict: Buy! Recommend picking your normal size vs True Fit recommendation.

J. Crew Petite Lodge Coat in Italian Stadium-Cloth Wool - Size 8 Petite

What I loved…

  • Length - This jacket is just the right length.

  • Fit - Overall, I found this coat fit my shape better than the Parka and Cocoon coats. It was super comfortable and fit well through the bust and waist area.

  • Sleeve length - The sleeves of this jacket were perfect. Also the sleeves have ribbed cuffs, which are such a nice feature. With all the walking I do in New York, it’s nice to get some protection from the wind blowing up your sleeves.

Garment measurements:

Bust = 39’’

Waist = 38.5’’

Bottom opening = 47’’

Center back = 31’’

Sleeve length = 29’’

Verdict: Buy!

Anne Klein Single-Breasted Wool Coat - Size 6

What I loved…

  • Color - Really loved the wine/burgundy color of this coat!

What could have been better…

  • Too big and long - Similar to the J. Crew Cocoon Coat, I realized that I accidentally bought a regular size (don’t worry I linked the petite size above!). Needless to say and what you can tell in the picture is that it’s too oversized for my frame.

Garment measurements:

Bust = 42’’

Waist = 39’’

Bottom opening = 55’’

Center back = 37’’

Sleeve length = 31.5’’

Verdict: Buy! Make sure you go with a petite size though!

J. Crew Cocoon Coat in Italian Stadium-Cloth Wool - Size 8

What I loved…

  • Color - The red color is absolutely gorgeous!

What could have been better…

  • Slightly big - Same deal as the Chateau Parka. I relied on the True Fit recommendation for what size to order, but it was too big. Would recommend ordering your normal size. Also would recommend ordering in a petite size, I accidentally ordered a regular size.

  • Extra fabric in waist - I love the way cocoon coats look, however I find they just never seem to be cut quite right for my body shape. The waist area was a little too roomy for me.

  • Sleeves slightly long - Since this coat wasn’t a petite size, that’s probably why the sleeves were too long on me.

Garment measurements:

Bust = 43.5’’

Waist = 41.5’’

Bottom opening =  45.5’’

Center back= 33.75’’

Sleeve length = 31.25’’

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Kristin Blake Jacket Hooded Soft Shell Jacket - Size S Petite

  • Fit -  Overall I was happy with how this jacket fit. It fit comfortable through the waist and hip area.

  • More of a fall jacket - I’d say this jacket is probably a better one for transitional seasons than winter. It’s more on the lightweight side.

What could have been better…

  • Sleeves too long - Even though this jacket is a petite size, I found the sleeves were too long for me.

Garment measurements:

Bust = 37.5’’

Waist = 36’’

Bottom opening = 46’’

Center back = 31.5’’

Sleeve length = 29.5’’

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Kenneth Cole Petite Wing-Collar Coat -  Size M Petite

What could have …

  • Too big - I think I needed to go a size down in this jacket because it seemed to be too big in the bust area.

  • Silhouette - As much as I wanted this coat to work for me, I didn’t love it. I’ve always been a fan of wing collar coats because who doesn’t want to look like Olivia Pope from Scandal. However, I’m going to have to keep shopping around to find a style like this that works for me.

  • Sleeves too long - Even though this coat is a petite size, the sleeves were too long.

Garment measurements:

Bust = 41’’

Waist = 39.5’’

Bottom opening = 49’’

Center back = 33.75’’

Sleeve length = 31.5’’

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.
