TOPSHOP PETITE DENIM REVIEW

TOPSHOP PETITE DENIM REVIEW

Denim has always been a hard category for me to shop since my hips curvy relative to my waist. While I’ve always been a huge fan of Topshop because they have a petite section, for awhile I was hesitant to try their denim because the legs looked to skinny on the hanger! Recently, I tried on some of their petite and regular denim styles to see if any would work well for my body type. If you've been hesitating to take the plunge as well, I'm sharing my thoughts and recommendations on the fits they offer below.

MY MEASUREMENTS

Bust = 33’’

Waist = 27.5’’

Stomach = 31’’

Hip = 38.5’’

STYLES THAT WORKED FOR ME

Topshop Petite Jamie High Waist Ankle Grazer Jeans - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • High Rise - If you followed my denim series in the Fall, you know by now that I’m a big fan of high rise denim. What I love about high rise styles is that I don’t encounter the dreaded waist gap, which is when a pair of jeans fits your hips & butt, but is too loose around the waist. These jeans hugged me around the waist and didn't slide down.

  • Just the right length - My favorite feature of these jeans was the inseam length because it falls exactly at the ankle. Topshop gets major points for carrying a 28’’ inseam (it's usually tough to find this length in stores)! This is the ideal length for me since I’m 5’ 2’’.

  • Not too tight - My biggest concern when trying on these jeans is that they would would be cut so small (since Topshop sizing tends to run smaller than American brands) that I would feel uncomfortable. Thankfully that was not the case, this style of denim was generous enough for my curves and had a good amount of stretch.

Topshop Petite Lucas Low Rise Slim Boyfriend Jeans - Size 6 Petite

What I loved…

  • Comfortable fit - Usually it’s challenging for me to find boyfriend denim because it’s either too baggy or not curvy girl friendly. I actually really loved this style because they fit my hips comfortably and weren’t too oversized.

  • Destruction - One feature I like about these jeans is that the knees are ripped, but they don't show that much skin. This makes them a little more wearable in spring when the wether hasn't totally warmed up yet.

What could have been better…

  • Waist slightly too big - Since these are low rise jeans, I found that they were a little loose around my waist. This is an issue I frequently run into with low rise denim since I have a pear-shaped body. The jean fit well everywhere else (legs & butt) except for the waist. I would definitely need to wear a belt with these.

Inseam = 28’’

Fit tip: Even though these jeans aren’t currently available in a petite size, you can also buy them in a regular size and order a shorter inseam. Generally when petite lengths are not available, I buy a 30 inch inseam.

Verdict: Buy!

Topshop Orson Jeans - Size 28 Waist  x 30 Inseam

What I loved…

  • High rise - This is one of my go to silhouettes because I find high rise jeans often fit me better in the waist. These jeans were slightly loose in the waist, but it wasn’t that noticeable

  • Petite-friendly length - Even though these jeans aren’t a true petite size, I found that they were a nice length for me. Generally when petite lengths are not available, I buy a 30 inch inseam, which is what these jeans are.

What could have been better...

  • Slightly tight around knee/calf area - I found these jeans were slightly tight around my knee and calf area. In the side and back view images, you can see that there are drag lines around my knee.

Verdict: Buy!

Topshop Petite Hayden Jeans - Size 28 Petite

What I loved…

  • Nice fit in thigh area - Compared to the Topshop Mom jeans, I found these jeans were more generously cut in the thigh area. They were comfortable and relaxed.

What could have been better...

  • Too big in waist - This wasn’t super surprising to me because I often have this problem that jeans are too big in the waist due to my pear shape. However, I think if you wear a belt with these it will do the trick.

  • No stretch -  Keep in mind that these jeans are 100% cotton so they have no stretch. Overall, I found the fit was more generous than the Mom jeans so they didn’t feel as uncomfortable. However, it all depends on your personal preference.

Topshop Editor Jeans - Size 28 x 30

What I loved…

  • Leg opening - I really like the leg shape of the jeans because it’s between a straight leg and skinny leg. Sometimes I find straight leg jeans make my legs look little bulkier since I’m a shortie, so this silhouette is a nice alternative!

  • Not too tight - Similar to the cropped jeans I mentioned above, these jeans weren’t overly tight despite being 100% cotton. No breaking in-time required!

What could have been better…

  • Waist gap - At this point, you guys know the drill! Since I had a waist gap wearing these pants, I’d recommend wearing a belt.

Garment measurements:

Waist = 30.25’’

Front rise = 12’’

Inseam = 24.875’’

Back rise = 15.375’’

Fit tip: While these jeans are available in a petite size, I’m worried that they might be too tight for my hip and thigh area. Generally I find that the proportions of the petite jeans are a little smaller than the regular sizes in the hip and thigh area.

Verdict: Buy!

Topshop Raw Hem Cropped Jeans - Size 28 x 30

What I loved…

  • Fit perfectly in the waist - Not only were these jeans high-waisted (aka my fave!), but they also fit super well in the waist. No gapping here!

  • Comfortable - These jeans were surprisingly comfortable despite being 100% cotton. Normally, when I wear non-stretch denim it feels a bit tight, however this pair was spacious enough in the thighs and seat.

What could have been better…

  • Fit - While I was happy they weren’t too tight, it’s kind of a double edged sword because they were a tad bit baggy on me in the legs. I’d recommend buying this style in a petite size because it will be more fitted in the leg area. The only reason I didn’t try on a petite size was that I couldn’t find one in the store.

  • Length - Since I tried on a non-petite size, they are longer than they should be for a cropped jean. Since this style has a raw hem you could easily cut off the excess fabric, however you’re probably better off just buying the petite size

Garment measurements:

STYLES THAT DIDN'T WORK FOR ME

Topshop Petite Mom Jeans - Size 28 Petite

What I loved…

  • Cute style - I’ve been seeing mom jeans all over Instagram lately and I think they look super cool! Before trying them on I wasn’t sure if I could pull them off, but now I realized that I can. These were definitely a fun style, however I need to find a pair that has some spandex!

What could have been better…

  • Too tight through hips - Although you can't see it in this picture, these jeans were definitely too snug around my hips. I wanted these jeans to work so bad, but I could tell if I ever tried to sit down wearing them then I would definitely bust a seam! Not only were they cut too narrow through the hips for my body type, but they didn’t have any stretch so I knew that would not work well for extended wear.

  • Length - I think Topshop has modified this style recently because the length was much shorter than I remember in the past. These jeans looked like capris on me, which I wasn’t a big fan of. (Inseam measurement = 24’’)

Topshop Petite Joni Legging - Size 8 Petite

What I loved…

  • High waisted - As I mentioned above with the Jamie style jeans, high rise styles generally work well for my pear-shaped figure. However, this was probably the only feature I really liked about this style.

What could be better…

  • Glorified leggings - These jeans were a little too thin for my taste, they reminded me more of leggings than denim.

  • Too short - I’m not sure if it was just the pair that I tried on in the store, but even though these jeans had a 28’’ inseam they were a little short on me. They sat above my ankles and I would have preferred them to be full length.

Topshop Petite Leigh Jeans - Size 28 Petite

What I loved…

  • Petite friendly length - These jeans were just the right length.

What could have been better…

  • Super tight - I found that these jeans felt super tight even though they were stretchy! I’d recommend going a size up because they were slightly uncomfortable.

Topshop New Boyfriend Jeans  - Size 28 Waist  x 30 Inseam

What could have been better…

  • Silhouette - As much as I want boyfriend style jeans to work for my body type, I always struggle to find ones that work for me. Unfortunately, these were no exception to that.

  • Too big in waist - These jeans were way too big in the waist for me. They were past the point where a belt would be helpful.

Fit tip: Even though these jeans aren’t currently available in a petite size, you can also buy them in a regular size and order a shorter inseam. Generally when petite lengths are not available, I buy a 30 inch inseam.

Verdict: Don’t buy, shop around.

Topshop Straight Jeans - Size 28 x 30

What I loved…

  • Style - I do really this style of jean because it’s super classic and pairs well with lots of tops!

What could have been better…

  • Tight in knee area - These were a bit too tight in the knee area on me. In the side and back view pictures, you can tell that the jeans are bunching at the back of my knee.

  • Tight in seat area - Compared to the Editor jeans, I found the Straight jeans were tighter in the bum. Additionally, I wish these jeans came up higher in the back. The back rise on the Straight Jeans was 14.25’’ while the back rise on the Editor Jeans was 15.375’’. Personally, I found the Editor style more comfortable for this reason.

Waist = 30.25’’

Front rise = 10.75’’

Verdict: Buy, but would opt for Editor Jeans over Straight Jeans.
