THE HISTORY OF THE BODY POSITIVITY MOVEMENT

What is body positivity anyways? How did the movement start?

Scrolling through your Instagram feed or reading articles on Refinery 29, you’ve probably noticed the words “body positivity” thrown around. Body positivity was a concept I first encountered when I started blogging nearly 4 years ago. While I initially thought I understood what these words meant, over time I realized there was a lot more history that I needed to explore.

Last summer, I spent time reading about the history of the fat activism movement in order to better understand the origins of the body positivity movement. Additionally, I interviewed a plus sized blogger, Nyla, who I had been a following on Instagram for a while and has strong understanding of the movement.

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ME

I can’t believe I’m writing this sentence, but it’s been nearly 4 years since I started this blog. It’s incredible how the time has flown. Recently, I realized that I haven’t ever written a true “get to know me” post for the blog. Since there have been some new faces around recently, I felt compelled to write one. Happy reading and can’t wait to see if we have anything in common!

THE PEAR NECESSITIES: THE WHITE BUTTON DOWN SHIRT

It’s been a long time since I’ve gone shopping for button down shirt. Generally, I stay away from this category because I find it challenging to shop for. Often times when a button down fits my bust area it’s then too tight it hip area! Can anyone else relate? However, recently one of my friends reached out about where to find a good button down and I realized I had NO IDEA off the top of my head! So I decided to order styles from a variety of brands to figure out which ones are truly pear-friendly! Keep reading to find out what brands I recommend!

THE PEAR NECESSITIES: THE SHEATH DRESS

Recently, I’ve started writing more clothing fit review posts on my blog. The main reason I started doing this is because I think it’s one way I can best serve you ladies. Personally, I find shopping to be an exhausting and demoralizing process so my goal is to spare you from it as much as possible. By trying on clothes and exposing you to new petite brands, my goal is to save you from hours in the dressing room and increase the chance you’ll find a piece you love without ordering from every brand under the sun.

In writing this post I realized, “ Man…It’s hard out there for petite girl to find a sheath dress that falls above your knees.” Generally, when I buy other styles of dresses in a petite size the length is fine so I was actually surprised to have this issue. However, I think it’s just the style of sheath dress most brands sell. Most seemed to be more on the conservative side from a length perspective, which is great for individuals with that fit preference, but leaves the rest of us having to always get dressed hemmed.

5 JACKET STYLES TO TRY IF YOU'RE PETITE & PEAR SHAPED

Finding jackets that fit me tends to be a complicate process for two reasons (1) I’m petite and (2) have a short torso. To get a better sense of how short my torso is, the measurement from the high point of my shoulder to my natural waist is 15.5’’. As a result, I don’t own that many jackets because I find them so challenging to shop for. In this post, I’m sharing my tried and true staple styles that I’ve acquired over the last few years.

REFORMATION WINTER COLLECTION REVIEW

Reformation is a brand that can be very hit or miss me. Sometimes styles fit very well and other times don’t seem to be cut for my body. Over the past couple times I’ve shopped, I find that I have the best luck with their dresses and tops. Recently I had the chance to visit their store and check out their latest pieces - keep reading for the full reviews of everything I tried on.

MY 3 GO-TO SKIRT STYLES AS A PETITE PEAR

Perhaps a more appropriate title for this blog post is - if you got it, flaunt it :) When I was younger, I used to feel embarrassed about my curves I was constantly wishing for a smaller butt and slimmer thighs. My goal was generally to hide these parts of my body rather than show them off. Now that I’m a bit older and wiser, I’ve learned to love them. Which brings me to the real purpose of this post - SKIRTS! They are an amazing way to show off your pear curves whatever your personal style might be. Keep reading for my favorite silhouettes and styling tricks!

BURT'S BEES BB CREAM REVIEW

Over the years I’ve gone back and forth between using foundation and BB cream. One of the main reasons I’ve decided to switch back to BB cream again is because it doesn’t clog my pores as much as foundation.

In the past I didn’t realize how much my makeup was contributing to my acne problem. Since learning the impact, I’ve tried to be more mindful when buying base layer cosmetics.

Personally, I’ve found buying a BB cream with decent coverage a challenge in the past. I remember buying L’Oreal’s version one time only to find myself applying multiple coats to even out my skin tone. I found this totally frustrating because the tube was tiny! I remembering thinking, “I’m totally gonna end up using all of this in a week!”

EXPRESS PETITES REVIEW

I’m excited to share this review because I’ve been wanting to check out more items from Express’ petite line ever since trying out their coats last Fall. It’s definitely been a while since I’ve shopped at Express. Honestly, I probably haven’t stepped foot in one since middle or high school. Was anyone else completely obsessed with their cami tank tops and t-shirts back in the day? While Express isn’t my go-to store, I’m always game to check out a brand that offers petite sizes.

30 AFFORDABLE PETITE-FRIENDLY ACTIVEWEAR FINDS TO KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR

Let’s face it when you’re petite, it’s much harder to shop for activewear. Workout tanks end up looking like dresses and mile-long leggings leave you wondering were your feet are. In an effort to make the shopping process a little bit easier for you, I rounded up some affordable activewear finds to help you kick off the new year. This post is organized into three different categories: $30 and under finds, $60 and under finds, and $100 and under finds. So hopefully, everyone will be able to find something that fits their personal budget! (For more reading on petite-friendly active brands, check out my post here.)

WHY I DECIDED TO START MY OWN BRAND

Today, I’m sharing a more personal post and talking about why I made the decision to start my own brand called LNO Studio (a size-inclusive, made to measure womenswear brand). While I haven’t talked about my career much in the past, I’ve decided it’s time to open up about it more. Not only is fashion a major part of my life from a blogging perspective, it’s also been a large part of my life from a career perspective too.

Starting my own fashion brand is something I’ve dreamed of doing for a long time. Let me start with a confession I actually started this blog three years ago because I was too scared to launch my own brand then. I was worried that I would fail at starting a company so I decided starting a blog would help me dip my toes in the deep end first. Like many women, I’ve had this mentality of constantly needing to prepare as much as possible ahead of time for everything that I might need to know. This mentality was also present in my career decisions. Every job I ever took after college was with the intent of learning lessons I thought would one day be valuable for starting a company. I think it’s pretty apparent at this point that I’m a serious planner. However, I now realize that it’s impossible for me to know everything I’ll ever need to know ahead of time. Life is about learning and growing, and if I was a 100% prepared for every situation then I wouldn’t be experiencing either of these things so central to the human condition.
